These days, you can’t go wrong with a textured haircut. Modern hair trends are constantly evolving. But, there’s one thing that we all can agree on: Perfectly polished and coiffed locks are out!  The clean-cut hairstyles that your father and grandfather rocked are a thing of the past! Today’s trends all revolve around texture. Textured hair offers a new twist on classic cuts while providing more volume and an effortlessly casual look.

What is a Textured Haircut

Texture in hair is nothing new. However, textured haircuts have only recently become popular with men. In the past, texturized hairstyles were a product of counter-culture. But today, it’s a must-have trend that’s here to stay! To put in simply, texturizing the hair is all about adding dimension. Barbers will use varying techniques to cut your hair at different lengths. It’s not rocket science! But, the process produces some impressive results.

Because texturizing creates layers of varying lengths, the hair naturally separates. Not only that, but it creates a ton of volume. So instead of flat hair that looks like a helmet, you have a casual style with loads of texture and dimension.

How to Add Texture to Your Hair

It doesn’t matter whether you have short hair or long flowing locks. Adding some texture isn’t a difficult process. It all starts with your barber! Instead of asking for the same-old style, talk to your barber about getting something a bit more textured and “messy.” Don’t worry. Your barber will know exactly what to do and take the reigns from there!

Typically, the go-to method for adding texture is to use a straight razor. Barbers will run the razor along sections of hair to create more variation. Some hair professionals will also use texturizing shears, which have teeth to achieve the same effect. Many hairstylists will also keep things old-school by simply cutting layers with straight shears. Whatever the case may be, the end product will be organic and voluminous!

How to Maintain Textured Hair

Getting your haircut is only half the battle! You have to know how to style and maintain your locks, too. Here are a couple of easy tips to get tousled tresses in minutes.

  • Keep your hair clean – Contrary to popular belief, dirt and oil is only going to weigh your hair down. Before styling, always start with clean and towel-dried hair.
  • Use texturizing pomades – Wax-based pomades are perfect for short textured hair. They offer the right amount of separation to bring out the detail in your cut.
  • Take advantage of sea salt spray – Like pomades, sea salt spray adds some great separation. It produces a wavy look, which is great for long textured hair men love to rock. Plus, the spray offers a much lighter hold than traditional hair sprays.
  • Work from the root – Whatever product you use, work it in at the root! You want most of the hold to be at the base of your hair to keep it voluminous.
  • Don’t be afraid of the hairdryer – A little heat can do wonders to help you achieve the right shape.
  • Master the tousle – Use your hands to tousle your hair and evenly distribute the product. You don’t have to be perfect! A textured haircut is best when it looks a little unkempt.
  • Trim regularly – Finally, keep your hair at the right length. Cut new layers when your locks get a bit longer to keep the casual look intact.

#1 The High Textured Coif

Here’s a style with a lot of movement. This cut requires some length up top. However, the sides are short and tidy. With proper layering, the length on top creates a dramatic wave and plenty of height. Add some highlights for even more dimension.

#2 The Punk Rock Crop

The Punk Rock Crop is all about individuality. While it certainly works with virgin hair, it looks best when you have some fun color to match. Whether you’re rocking bleach blonde or something a bit more vibrant, the layered locks create a crown of flat spikes that look great on any guy.

#3 Hard Line Spikes

Want something a bit more extreme? The Hard Line Spikes textured haircut encompasses the punk aesthetic. Up top, you have a classic faux hawk. The texture comes from the subtle spikes and volume. For the sides, a subtle fade keeps things short and tight. Meanwhile, a hard line from the temple to the temple adds some head-turning attitude.

#4 The Textured Comb-Over

Need to rock a professional haircut? Here’s a style that lets you maintain a more formal appearance while still having some fun texture. The hair on the front of your head slicks back over a traditional side comb-over. With some good layering, the styling provides some unique definition to an otherwise stale cut!

#5 Textured Crop and Fade

Ideal for guys who like to keep a clean-shaven look, the texture on this style is subtle. It works best with hair that’s cut very short. Some modest layering up top creates a cool woven effect. Meanwhile, the sides have a signature fade that leaves your face looking clean cut.

#6 Hard Part Textured Curls

Check out this style that combines rigid lines and organic curves! This is a good option for guys with naturally straight hair who want a little more definition. Rather than slicking everything back, use some pomade to create individual curls! Pair it with a hard part and tight fade, and you have a sleek look that will attract some attention.

#7 Textured Caesar-Style Crop

This textured crop haircut is a modern variation of the old-school Caesar cut. It still has the signature straight bangs and close sides. But, up top has tons of texture. Just use your fingers to tousle your hair for dimension. Then, swoop those bangs to the side for a rugged casual look.

#8 The Messy Faux Hawk

Not for the faint of heart, this style is bold and eye-catching! It’s a unique twist on the classic faux hawk. But instead of stiff spikes, you’re getting loose texture and plenty of mess. Best for guys who like to live on the wild side, this cut can make you look like a rockstar!

#9 The Slicked-Back Textured Undercut

The traditional undercut is still in-fashion. But this hairstyle adds a more organic twist to it! Achieving the look is easy. With reverse hair layering on top, all you need to do is separate sections and slick everything back. Some strong pomade and spray will maintain height and separation.

#10 Textured Thorns

This cut is best for men with short hair. It’s also a great option for guys who are starting to thin on top, as the texture helps to mask imperfections on the scalp! To style it, spike individual sections to create small thorns. For the sides and back, keep things short and clean.
